Carrington shares 2 birth stories in this episode. Her first birth happened in April 2020, at the very beginning of the COVID-19 shutdown. Despite changing midwife clinics at 37 weeks pregnant, she was able to have the unmedicated birth in a hospital that she originally planned for. She went into labor at 41 weeks and labored for ~29 hours, 14 of those hours spent in active labor. She shares about her challenging experience with navigating the anxiety, fear and unknown delivering in the early days of the pandemic and also about her challenging postpartum experience.Â
Despite the challenging postpartum experience, her and her partner decided to try for another baby in late 2021. Carrington did lots of research and prep to make sure she had a better postpartum experience this time – she saw a therapist every week, lined up a postpartum doula, etc. She had a relatively normal pregnancy until 37 weeks when her fundal height measured 3cm short and she was diagnosed with IUGR based on her ultrasound results. She pushed back against being induced, but ultimately decided it was the best decision to make sure the baby was safe and healthy. She was determined to still stick to her plan to birth unmedicated despite being induced with Pitocin and ultimately had a beautiful and quick birth experience and had a very redeeming postpartum period the second time around.Â
